FAQ - PULPchat Setup

last modified May 22, 2008

Can I pass usernames to PULPchat so people don't have to log in twice?

The Latest PULPchat Launch Form really makes it easy. Follow these steps to automatically log your registered users in:

  • Make sure you are using the latest PULPchat Launch Form. If you are using one of the older javascript functions to launch your PULPchat, remove it completely and use the new form.
  • Using whatever server-side scripting is available (PHP, ASP, etc), fill in the optional "pulp_user" form field with the user's screen name.
  • Have your script fill in the other fields with information about your user such as their icon or avatar, their homepage id or folder, and a short text description like "24 m London".
  • When the user clicks the launch button, the chat will open and they will be automatically logged in.

Passwords
For security reasons, you cannot send plain text passwords to PULPchat. This is not really necessary for your registered users because they cannot change the values in the hidden fields of the launch form and the only values they can see are their own.

Any names that you register in your PULPchat User Manager have to log in through the PULPchat login page. For example, your moderators will have to enter their password again when the chat window first appears.

It is possible to send encrypted passwords from your own database, see this FAQ.
